In Singapore, basically, we have 4 different race groups – Indians, Chinese, Malay and Eurasians. Each of these race groups has their own set of customs and practices which they will carry out.
(a) Choose one race group and explain what is their custom and practices like.
You may write in point form. Do not type exactly the same as what its shown on your book.
(b) Name the traditional costumes worn by each race group. Select one which you would like to wear and explain why.
Reflect your answers in this blog by posting in the comments section.

ReplyDeleteEurope: In areas where contemporary Western fashions have become usual, traditional garments are often worn in connection with special events and celebrations, particularly those connected with cultural traditions, heritage, or pride.
ReplyDeleteIn modern times there are instances where traditional garments are required by law, as in Bhutan, where the traditional Tibetan-style clothing of gho and kera for men, kira and toego for women, must be worn by all citizens -- even those not of Tibetan heritage; or in Saudi Arabia, where women are required to wear the abaya in public.

ReplyDelete(a)I choose the Malay race. When Malays greet their elders, they lower their heads and kiss the elders' hands. Then, they put their palms to their hearts to show sincerity. They do this to show respect to one another.Their traditional Malay weddings are important too. Part of it is called the bersanding. It means "sitting in state". At this ceremony, the bride and groom sit on a decorated platform to receive best wishes from family members, relatives and friends.Malays give and recieve gifts with both hands like the chinese. They consider it impolite to do this using only the left hand. According to the Malay custom, it is polite to open the gifts only after the guests have left. When a child is born into a Muslim family, the father whispers a prayer into the child's ear. Then, something sweet such as chewed dates or honey is rubbed onto the roof of the child's mouth. As for the food, the Malays enjoy eating Nasi Lemak and Ketupats. Nasi Lemak is made by cooking rice with coconut milk. This is how the Malays cook their rice. The ketupat is made by stuffing uncooked rice into woven coconut leaves. After that, they boil it, and finally eat it.Many Malay dishes are cooked with coconut milk, which makes them rich in flavour. The Lantong and the Rendang are two examples of Malay food.Malays only use their right hands to eat food. Only the fingertips are used when eating with hands. Hands are washed clean before and after a meal. As many Malays are Muslims, they say a short prayer before eating. As for the Malay games, they have the Congkak. It is a game played by two people. In this game, there is a board with several storehouses in it. A player has to gather as many counters as possible into the storehouses on his side. Marbles are usually used to play Congkak.
ReplyDelete(b)The Malay traditional costumes for the women are the Baju Kurung and the Kebaya. The Baju Kurung is a loose long blouse worn over a sarong. A sarong is a long peice of cloth wrapped around the waist. Like the Baju Kurung, the Kebaya is also a blose worn over a sarong. A Kebaya looks like what Nonyas wear now. As for the Malay men, they wear the Baju Melayu. The Baju Melayu is a loose shirt worn over a pair of trousers. They also wear a kain samping which is a short sarong tied around the waist. They wear a songkok to complete the costume. The Baju Melayu can be wore with the shirt tucked in and the shirt tucked out.

Choose race : Chinese
ReplyDeleteHas many beliefs and cultural practises to observe.
Hungry ghost month - cannot swim as believe "water ghost" will come after you. Must returned home before midnight as believed ghosts come out at 12 midnight. Cannot step on joss burnings as believe will fall sick. Cannot turn back and look when heard someone called your name.
Chinese New Year - cannot break glasses, means bad luck. No black colour attire but red or bright colour. Must leave some food behind for evey meal as it symobolise more to come for future. Cannot say "die".
Funeral - never look at the coffin when they put the body in and closed it. Believe your spirit will be close inside too. Must wash your hands and face with leaves in the water, so that the dead person or any "ghosts" around will not follow you home. The money for the family of the dead must be in odd number multiples. If find a black cat around the coffin means bad luck.
All these traditional beliefs and customs make it interesting to be a chinese. Chinese has many festivals other than the above-mentioned ones like mid-autumn festival.
Chinese - zhongsan,samfoo,qipao
malay-baju kurung or kebaya, bsju melayu or kain samping and a songkok
indian-punjabi,sherwani,sari
eurasians-dance costume on special occasions. Normal time is just traditional costume which is a white long sleeved shirt with a vest, worn with long black trouser.
I chose sherwani cos it look smart and chic. The long thin coat to pair with a trousers is something i never try before.
I choose the Chinese:-
ReplyDelete*When they visit each other they will usually bring a little gift.
*They cannot give handkerchiefs, shoes, clocks and sharp and pointed objects.
*The red packet for occasions like CNY and weddings usually contains an amount of money with the number '8', in Chinese "fa" meaning prosperity.
*Will have reunion dinner on CNY eve to get all the family members gather together once a year.
*Usually will wear red clothing on 1st day of CNY.
*Elders do not like to see people wearing black on CNY.
*Drinks should be served with both hands.
*Some Chinese wear traditional costumes during special occasion:
Ladies:qipao/samfoo
Men :zhongshan
*Newborn babies will have a grand 1-month-old celebration with each guest bringing home red egg(s).
I would like to wear a qipao.
(a) For the Chinese, when a child ceblebrates his or her first birthday, hard-boiled eggs which dyed red, will be distributed to friends and relatives. The giving of eggs signifies the welcoming of the new baby and the colour red symbolizes happiness.
ReplyDelete(b) For the Chinese, the traditional costumes are qipao for ladies and zhongshan for the men. I would to wear the zhongshan as it makes me look a kungfu master. How cool!
I choose chinese a)they usually bring a gift when they are visiting someone.during a tea ceremony, the newly wed couple would have to offer tea to their elders as a sign of respect.in return, the couple would either get a red packet or jewellery back.when a baby is one month old, hard boiled eggs which are dyed red would be given to relatives and friends. b)malay:baju melayu with shirt tucked in or out, baju kurung, kebaya chinese:zhongshan, samfoo, qipao indian: northen indians:sherwani, punjabi southern indians:sari eurasians:dance costumes I like the punjabi because i think it looks very nice with all the patterns and colours.also, i wouldn't sweat too much because it is loose and airy
ReplyDeletea)chinese:you cannot give these things
ReplyDelete-sharp things
-handkerchiefs/clocks
-Birthday Customs of the Newborn and Elderly
ReplyDeleteChinese people put their family in a very important position as they regard it as a means to keep the family blood stream continuosly running, and the running family bloodstream maintains the life of the whole nation. That is why children production and breeding in China becomes a focus of all members of families. It is even accepted by them as an essential moral duty. There is a chinese saying that of all who lack filial piety, the worst is who have no children. The fact that chinese people pay great attention to children prduction and breeding can be supported by many customary practices. Many traditional customs about preproduction of children are all based on the idea of children protection. When a wife is found to be pregnant, people wil say she"has happiness,"and all her family members will feel overjoyed about it.Throughout the whole period of pregnancy, both she and the fetus are well attended,so that the fetus is not hurt in any way and the new generation is born both physically and mentally healthy. To keep the fetus in good condition, the going-to-be mother is offered sufficent nutritious food and some chinese traditional medicines believe to be helpful to the fetus.
